The closest championship battle in the Bay Equipment Rentals Weekly Racing Series took another turn on Friday night, but it was all behind Brandon McGrath (Antigonish).

McGrath scored his second career victory and second in as many weeks. In another caution free affair, McGrath left his competition in the dust, taking the win by a half straightaway over Addison Veinotte (Porters Lake). Adlee Lively (Middle Sackville) grabbed third in the late laps with Ben Turple (Halifax) and Sarah Vandenburg (Lower Onslow) fifth.

It appeared that Shelby Chisholm (Antigonish) was poised for a podium finish throughout the feature as she battled with Turple for third. A mechanical failure in the final laps relegated her to seventh place at the finish. In turn, it handed the point lead to Veinotte by three points heading into the Halifax 300.

Meanwhile, McGrath hasn’t lost a race in two events after picking up both the heat and feature the last two weeks. McGrath is the second to do so this year. The feat has been pulled thrice by Shelby Chisholm in the class this season.

Ethan Hicken (New Glasgow) and Hailey Bland (Lakeview) picked up feature victories in the Bluenose Pools Bandolero division on Finale Friday.

In the nightcap, it was a wild affair that saw the time limit flag threaten the finish. Matthews led the first eight laps before Hicken got under her for the lead. Pashkoski and Bland would follow suit on the next lap. A green-white-checkered finish would be trigged by DeCoste’s car coming to a crawl.

On the restart, Hicken and Pashkoski would come together racing for the lead, sending both to the back and to a final green-white-checkered finish with the time flag issued.
Bland would pull away from Matthews on the final restart to pick up her third win of the season and fourth for the team. Emma MacMillan (Maitland) battled hard at the finish to hold off all challengers for her first podium in the Bandolero division. Hicken, the heat winner, and Lily Whynot (Dartmouth) rounded out the top five.

Pashkoski will only have to start the Halifax 300 in a field of 15 cars or less to pick up her first career championship at Scotia Speedworld.

Mitchell Hopkins (Beaver Bank) dug deep when he needed to and came out of Finale Friday with his second feature victory of the year. Hopkins started 10th on the 24 car field and was to the lead by Lap Seven in a three wide move over the pair of 87 cars in the field – Brandon MacDonald and the visiting Shane Cudmore. Ross Moore (Lake Egmont) shadowed the No 68 through the move and worked his bumper for the duration, including two mid-race restarts, but could not solve the Mazda 3. Chasing Hopkins and Moore to the line included Travis Keefe (Gold River), Colin Matthews (Bedford) and Tim Wright (Middle Stewiacke).

The No 47 would not pass post race technical inspection, giving fourth to Wright and fifth to Blake MacDonald in his best finish of 2024.

Brandon MacDonald, Chevy MacDonald and Chris McMullin captured heat wins.

Moore only has to start the feature during the Halifax 300 to become a back-to-back Toursec Mini Stock champion.

While mechanical gremlins still played with the No. 89 Nova Construction Legend car, they stayed at bay enough for Danny Chisholm (Port Williams) to take home the team’s first Friday night win of the season in the Strictly Hydraulics Legends. It was not easy though as Chisholm lined up alongside Co-National Semi-Pro point leader Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) on a pair of mid-race restarts. Christensen kept Chisholm honest but could not get closer than a half car length when the pay window opened to take home the win.

Owen Mahar (Hubley) was third in the feature, followed by Campbell Delaney (Halifax) and Chase MacKay (Bear Cove).

Heat wins in the 25 car field went to Chisholm, Delaney and Aiden MacDonald (York, PE).

With his runner-up finish, Christensen officially clinched the 2024 Strictly Hydraulics Legends championship without having to start next week’s Halifax 300. This is the first time in over a decade that a driver has clinched a title a week before the finale.

Congrats to the Ayden Christensen Racing team!

In the second feature, it looked to be Phil Barkhouse Jr’s (Hammonds Plains) race but an untimely late caution with four laps to go between Alex Johnson (Enfield) and Dowe set up a restart. Russell Smith Sr started on Phil’s outside and was able to roll around the No. 99 for the win. Hilchie started behind Smith and was able to ultimately get passed Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Chad Sinton (Truro) for the final podium spot. Sinton recorded his first top five run of the year in fourth while Wallage recorded his second top five of the night in fifth.

Breen, Barkhouse and reigning track champion Jesse Deveau (Greenwood) took home heat wins.

Russell Smith Sr only has to start the Halifax 300 in  field of 23 cars or less to capture the 2024 Maritime Auto Glass Sportsman Championship.
