August 9th: Sportsman 100 Night

SPORTSMAN

Deven Smith (Lakeside) can now add his name alongside his brother Russell Jr. as a Sportsman 100 winner at Scotia Speedworld.

Smith wasted little time driving to the front on Friday night and held off a mid-race challenge from Travis Roma (West Chezzetcook) and a late race bid from Brady Creamer (Miramichi, NB) to win the longest distance Sportsman race of the season at the Speedworld. It is a dream season for Smith in his second year driving a Sportsman car after winning the 100, the Shriners Classic and taking the point lead into the final month of the season.

Matt Vaughan (Bedford) and his bid for a second straight Sportsman 100 fell short by one position, finishing second after getting by Creamer in the late laps. Creamer, driving one of Jordan Veinotte’s Sportsman cars, finished third. Alex Johnson (Enfield) followed up his first career win in the division with a fourth place finish while Darren Hilchie (Lake Charlotte) was fifth in the 23-car field.

Heat wins went to Pete Miller (Kennetcook), Roma and Mike Alexander (Dartmouth).

TOURSEC THUNDER

After trying for a decade to win a race at Scotia Speedworld, Taylor McLean (New Glasgow) took home a checkered flag on the biggest weekend of the season.

McLean’s first career Toursec Thunder car win was a big one, holding off one of the hottest drivers in the Mini Stock division in Atlantic Canada. Jesse Deveau (Greenwood) challenged McLean every step of the way in the second half but could not force a mistake out of the No. 18. Darren Flemming (Shubenacadie) was third on the night, followed by Tim Webster (Beaver Bank) and Neil Miousse (Kentville).

McLean also won the heat race for a clean sweep of the night.

With Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) experiencing motor issues on the night, it hands the point lead over to Deveau with a month to go in the 2019 season.

STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS

Tylor Hawes (Porter’s Lake) finished up the task he started two races prior and drove his car to victory lane for the first time in the Strictly Hydraulics Legends 2019 season. Hawes, who started the night locked deep into a point battle for second in the standings, was able to race to the 25-lap feature win ahead of part time drivers Wyatt McCulloch (Stewiacke) and Kody Quinn (Sydney), giving him a little cushion in the championship battle. Reigning track champion Paul Goulden (Shelburne) recorded his third straight top five finish with a fourth place run, ahead of point leader Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville).

Heat wins went to McCulloch and Goulden.

HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS

OUTLAWS
Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) equaled the score on Friday night by scoring his second Bandolero Outlaw win at Scotia Speedworld. The second feature win evened the score with three of his peers, who also have two wins on the season over the eight races contested so far.

This one was a cake walk for Noble, who celebrated by wishing Stan Miller a Happy Birthday on Friday. Noble drove away from the field, leaving Dylan Dowe (Bedford) battling with Danny Chisholm (Canning) for the runner up spot with Dowe getting the advantage. Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow), driving for Owen Mahar (Hubley) was fourth with Nathan Langille (Coldbrook) racing to fifth.

Noble also picked up the heat win.

BANDITS

Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) is finding his stride late in this 2019 season.

Christensen scored his third win of the season, and second straight, in convincing fashion on Friday evening. Christensen held court on a restart in the second half and was able to keep Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) far enough behind that the youngster couldn’t challenge the No. 24 late in the race. MacKay brought home the runner-up spot with Morgan Mosher (Mahone Bay) scoring his first podium finish of the year on the biggest race weekend of the season. Brooke Dowe (Bedford) was fourth while Gage Gilby (Enfield), who spun out chasing Christensen in the waning laps, rebounded for fifth.

MacKay was the winner in the heat.

BEGINNERS

While some first time winners have stolen the headlines as of late in the Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandolero division, Miles MacKenzie (Porter’s Lake) reminded us Friday that he was still in the thick of the championship hunt.

In fact, MacKenzie hadn’t been on the podium since his last feature win in June. He broke back in fine fashion though, winning Friday’s feature for the Beginners on Toromont Cat 250 weekend. MacKenzie had no immediate pressure from behind at the end, taking the win by a half straightaway over Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie contenders Chase Livingston (Springhill) and Brett Pashkoski (Beaver Bank). Caden Tufts (Timberlea) finished just shy of the podium in fourth after winning the heat race with Daniel Vandenburg putting up an impressive run for his first feature top five of his career.

MacKenzie will head into the INEX National Qualifiers as the point leader.
