Toursec Thunder Triple Threat

Welcome to the 2018 racing season!

We’re in for a busy Sunday afternoon at Scotia Speedworld as we kick off racing in six divisions (when you split the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero classes into a Beginner and Outlaw/Bandit class). There are a lot of storylines heading into Sunday and by the sounds of it the pre-registration numbers seem strong across the board.

While we have some new faces in race cars and some familiar faces in new places, those stories will come as the season gets fired up and we begin to see those stories unfold.
So, what are we doing here? I want to shed the light on three drivers in one of our most competitive division that will be searching for their first Scotia Speedworld wins in 2018. Sure, the Toursec Thunder division might not have the biggest numbers in cars on track anymore but the racing is just as fierce and competitive as you’ll see in our Affordable Fuels Sportsman and Strictly Hydraulics Legends divisions.

I think I share the same sentiment with many fans when I say that I love seeing first time winners. Nic Baker was due for a win in the Toursec Thunder class last year and was able to complete the task on Race Two last year. While he will be a championship contender alongside the likes of Dave Matthews and Chris Hatcher, he may be joined by a trio of others who are looking for their first victories in the class.

Neil Miousse, Jesse Deveau and Darren Flemming each got on the podium in a Thunder car race at Scotia Speedworld for the first time last year. The trio come from varying backgrounds of racing but all started racing at Scotia Speedworld within a year of each other.

Miousse came from Speedway 660 and after a move to Kentville began racing his Sharp Shooter in the Toursec Lightning class. Last year he competed full time in the Thunder class after buying a former Matthew Warren car and won the Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year Award and was third overall in the standings.

Flemming was Miousse’s prime competition for the top freshman honors in 2017 but one mechanical problem knocked him out of contention in the point battle. Flemming’s father Dwayne enjoyed success in the Toursec Thunder division and it appears after last year that the younger Flemming is going to enjoy much of the same.

Deveau ran a part time schedule in 2016 before committing to the full slate at Scotia Speedworld last year. Deveau won a Four Cylinder championship on the dirt at Valley Raceway before making the move to the asphalt. He has one MJS and Prime Lift East Coast Mini Stock Tour win but it also came on the dirt track last October.

So, the question remains not if all three will win races in the Toursec Thunder class, they all have shown they have the talent, it is who will win their first before the other two? Two of the three finished in the top five in points and Flemming’s handicap was sixth best of all full time competitors in 2017. If we are looking at bold predictions, I think all three will finish in the top five in points in this upcoming season. That’s a tall task with the competition in the class and while Dave and Chris will once again be tough, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of, or all three, are in that championship discussion in September.

Can Miousse, Deveau and Flemming catch that first win in the Season Opener on Sunday? Only time will tell.

There are lots of stories to follow this season and we’ll break them down as the year goes on. Put on your positive thinking cap on and hope for some dry weather so we can get this party started at Scotia Speedworld!

Until Sunday, keep the hammer down and we’ll see you at the track!
