June 1st: Hydraulics Plus Night

HYDRAULICS PLUS BEGINNER BANDOLEROS
In a field that saw three drivers make their oval racing debut, it was a sophomore driver picking up his first career feature victory.

After winning the heat race, Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) would wind up going to victory lane in the Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandolero main feature. It was not easy though as he had to fend off challenges from multiple drivers on a number of restarts in the first race of the year. Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River), Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) and rookie Gage Gilby put up the biggest challenges to Christensen but wound up second to fourth in the feature, respectively. Emma MacMillan (Glenholme), daughter of former Toursec Lightning champion Marc MacMillan, brought her car home in fifth in her first career stock car race.

HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS
Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) scored a popular overall win, the second of his career, and first Outlaw win on Friday night in the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Season Opener.
Noble inherited the lead late in the race when Danny Chisholm (Canning) and Josh Langille (Coldbrook) tangled for the lead position. The top five positions in the final third of the race could be likened to a game of musical chairs as the likes of Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow) and Owen Mahar (Hubley) also found themselves heading to the rear late in the race.

Noble held off multi-time 2017 Beginner Bandit feature winner Matthew Rushton (Dartmouth) and Devin Wadden. Both Rushton and Wadden unveiled new colors for the season in their opener on Friday. Josh Langille recovered for fourth overall while Mahar brought his car home fifth and first in class for the Bandits.

Heat wins went to Mahar and Josh Langille.

STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
Like she did one week ago, Emily Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines) positioned herself up front late and was able to drive away to the Strictly Hydraulics Legend car victory.

Meehan took the lead from sophomore Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville) with less than five laps to go in the 25-lap feature. Lively, who was looking for his first Legend car feature victory, battled with an ill handling race car late in the feature and could not hold off Meehan as she drove to her second victory in as many races.

Lively settled for second ahead of reigning track champion Paul Goulden (Shelburne). Goulden started sixth with seven laps to go and was able to pass Danny Harvey (Lantz) and Shelby Baker (Fall River) to round out the podium.

Lively and Jeff Cruickshank (Hantsport) won the qualifying heat races.

The event was red flagged for nearly an hour on Lap 18 following an incident that saw Craig MacDonald (Waverley), driving for Cory Hall Racing in the No. 08 car, impact the wall out of Turn Two after battling for the lead with Lively. MacDonald hit the wall twice and was favoring his knee following the accident. A social media post following the event indicated that MacDonald had sustained severe swelling in his knee but nothing was broken or dislocated in the accident.

TOURSEC THUNDER
Another race, another first time winner.

After his father Dwayne raced for a number of years in the Toursec Thunder division, his son Darren is now a winner in the division.

The sophomore driver from Belnan joined an elite list of Scotia Speedworld winners on Friday night by taking his first checkered flag in the 25-lap event. Flemming inched away late from the battle for second place that featured multi-time and reigning champion Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) battling with Chris Hatcher (Beaver Bank). Hatcher was determined to get by Matthews, but could not get the car to hook up on the outside line to complete the pass.
Neil Miousse (Kentville), who scored his first feature win a week prior, was fourth with Nic Baker (Middle Sackville) in fifth in the 11 car field.

Baker and Matthews scored heat race victories.

AFFORDABLE FUELS SPORTSMAN
After starting up front alongside 2016 champion Pete Miller (Kennetcook), it was Matt Vaughan (Bedford) who had the last laugh in the battle of the recent Affordable Fuels Sportsman champions.

Vaughan got out front early and stretched his legs in the fast paced 38-lap feature which only featured a single caution period in the opening laps of the race. Vaughan was chased early by Frankie Fraser (Shubenacadie) but was able to extend his lead as Fraser chased Vaughan through lapped traffic.

Fraser battled early with Miller but late in the race Miller found himself in a three way battle for third. Miller and Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) found each other on the last lap in the last corner, sending Miller around. Race officials penalized Veinotte for his role in the incident, moving both outside of the top five at the finish.

“Mr Excitement” Kirk Ryan (Upper Nine Mile River) was relieved to finish on the podium at the end as he drove through the smoke to third. Fourth was former Sportsman champion Aaron Boutiler (Porter’s Lake) while Megan Parrott (Beaver Bank) impressed by finishing fifth in only her second Late Model race.

Miller and Boutilier took home heat race victories in the 17 car field.
