August 3rd: Canadian National Autism Foundation Night

Affordable Fuels Sportsman
History was made at Scotia Speedworld on Friday night

Megan Parrott (Beaver Bank) capped off a Canadian National Autism Foundation (CNAF) Kids Race night that saw three female feature winners. It is the first time in the 31 year history of the track that three females have won features on the same night and it is believed to be the first time in over 20 years, or since before Parrott was born, that a female has won a Late Model division feature at Scotia Speedworld.

Parrott, who finds herself in the thick of the Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie of the Year battle, took the lead early from Antigonish’s Jeffrey Breen and raced with Matt Vaughan (Bedford) in the opening stages of the race. A caution just two laps shy of the halfway point in the 38-lap feature would close up the field and allow Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake), who started at the rear by virtue of two feature wins on the year, to catch up to the rookie leader and defending division champion.

Over the final 20 laps, Parrott was able to maintain a lead over Veinotte and Vaughan and held it through lapped traffic late to score her first win in a Sportsman car in just her seventh start. Veinotte kept the pressure on but Parrott did not make a mistake for the No. 11 to capitalize and settled for second. Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island) was able to sneak by Vaughan in the waning laps to take third while Alex Johnson (Enfield) backed up his podium finish in the Shriners Classic up with a fifth place run on CNAF Night.

Parrott won the second Affordable Fuels Sportsman heat race while Joey Livingstone (Pictou Landing) was a happy camper after winning his 10-lap qualifier.

The race served as the final tuneup for the Affordable Fuels 100 on Friday, August 10th.

STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
Emily Meehan (Rawdon) waited for the right opportunity to pounce to capture her third feature win of the Strictly Hydraulics Legend season.

Meehan joined the battle for the lead late in the 25-lap feature that included her brother Adam (Rawdon), who was driving for Robin Lowthers in the No. 58, Craig MacDonald (Waverley), who was driving for the Overall Experience in the No. 2 and Nathan Blackburn (Timberlea), who was driving his own race car. The three youngsters and former Bandolero graduates had dispatched Jeff Cruickshank (Hantsport) from the lead early and raced it out amongst themselves before Emily had joined them to dance for the top spot.

When the door opened for the No. 75, the opportunity was not passed up as she drove to the lead.

“That is the absolute best car I have ever driven in my life,” said an excited winner in victory lane. “I knew I couldn’t wait around because Adam was good on the inside so I bombed it around the outside line and it stuck. He raced me clean and I ended up coming home with the win!”

Blackburn, who drove one the best races of his short Legend career thus far, came home a strong third behind the Meehan siblings. Shelby Baker (Fall River) raced his way to a fourth place finish with track champion Paul Goulden (Shelburne) coming home fifth.

Blackburn and Cruickshank took home heat wins.

TOURSEC THUNDER
With five different feature winners in as many races, at some point the Toursec Thunder division would have to see a first two-time winner on the year.

That came Friday night and his name was Darren Flemming.

The Belnan driver raced to a caution free Toursec Thunder win and snapped a three way tie atop the point standings after six races. Flemming had Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) closing the gap late with Jesse Deveau (Greenwood) working hard to finish third on the evening. Drew MacEachern (Dartmouth) was in the mix for a third straight week but fell just short of a podium finish in fourth. Neil Miousse (Kentville) started dead last in the 25-lap feature and rallied to fifth when the checkered flag flew.

Nic Baker (Middle Sackville) held off Greg McKay (Eastern Passage) for the first heat win while Flemming scored maximum points on the night after winning both his heat and the feature.

HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS
Danny Chisholm (Canning) backed up his first win of the 2018 season at Scotia Speedworld with another seven days later.

Chisholm started 11th on the 15 car field and worked his way up to the lead prior to the halfway mark in the fast paced 15-lap feature. Behind Chisholm was an intense battle for second with Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) being able to edge both Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow) and Josh Langille (Coldbrook) for the runner-up spot in the late laps. Nate Singer (Kennetcook) continued his impressive 2018 season with a fifth place finish.

Owen Mahar (Hubley) was the top Bandit in the field for a fifth time this season. Overall, the No. 66 finished eighth.

Mahar and Noble took home heat race victories.

The Hydraulics Plus Bandoleros are off this week with INEX Bandolero Nationals taking place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway (NC). We wish Danny Chisholm all the best as he will take on the best in the world this weekend.

HYDRAULICS PLUS BEGINNER BANDOLEROS
Gage Gilby (Enfield) was inches away from his fifth straight Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandolero victory.

Then the caution flag flew, which set up what ended up being the maximum three attempts at a green-white-checkered finish.

One of those attempts saw Gilby and fellow front row starter Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) slide around which placed both to the rear.

Enter Emma MacMillan.

The Glenholme youngster, as surprised as anyone, drove to her first Scotia Speedworld victory in the race. MacMillan held off Emily Chisholm (Antigonish) and Ayden Christensen for the win. For MacMillan and Chisholm, it was their career best finishes in a Bandolero. Campbell Delaney and Caden Tufts completed the top five.

Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River), who was also shuffled around late in the running order, showed the way in the heat race.
