30 Sportsman Expected to Compete in Shriners Classic Friday
(Halifax, NS - June 13, 2024) Race fans will be cheering Friday night for their favourite Maritime Auto Glass Sportsman drivers as they compete in the 29th running of the iconic Shriners Classic. The stout field of Sportsman will run a 75-lap extended feature. Also on the Bay Equipment Rentals weekly racing card are the Bluenose Pools Beginners, Bluenose Pools Bandoleros and Strictly Hydraulics Legends. Adult tickets are $20.00; Youth tickets (8-15 years) are $5.00 and children seven and under are admitted for FREE all season at Scotia Speedworld! Tickets will be available at the gate on race day. Grandstand gates open at 5:00 with qualifying slated to get underway at 7:00 PM.
The Shriners Classic is one of the most prestigious races on the Scotia Speedworld calendar for both veterans and newcomers to the Maritime Auto Glsss Sportsman division. Originally a Street Stock race, the race transitioned to the Sportsman when the Street Stock division dissolved in the early 2000s. Local racing heroes the likes of reigning East Coast International Pro Stock Tour champion Craig Slaunwhite (Terence Bay, NS), multi-time Tour race winner and inaugural 1995 Classic winner Gordie Ryan (Wellington, NS), Harry Ross White (Noel Road, NS), Darren Wallage (Oakfield, NS), James Graves (Berwick, NS) and Russell Smith Jr (Lakeside, NS), just to name a few, have all won the race at least once. The late Terry Roma (West Chezzetcook, NS) was the first to three with Jeff Dillman (Middle Musquodoboit, NS) winning his fourth in 2014. Deven Smith (Lakeside, NS) is a three time champion and could tie Dillman’s record on Friday. Pete Miller (East Gore, NS) is the defending champion of the event.
For the first time in event history, the race will be a 75-lap feature and is the first extended distance race of the season. Dylan Dowe (Bedford, NS) heads into the event as the point leader after three events. Russell Smith Sr (Lakeside, NS) has won the last two events on the schedule and looks to add his name beside his sons as a Shriners Classic champion on Friday. Thirty drivers are on the expected entry list for the event.
