Daniel Vandenburg (Lower Onslow) inched one step closer to his first Scotia Speedworld track championship on Friday night with his fourth feature triumph of the season. Vandenburg took the lead on Lap 10 after Hailey Bland (Lakeview) tossed a chain on her No. 27 car after leading the first nine laps from the pole. Vandenburg would get distance on the rest of the field on a final restart with five laps to go and lead Landon Pierce (Bridgewater) and Brett Pashkoski (Beaver Bank) to battle for second. While Pierce was able to make inroads on Vandenburg and close in at the finish, he was unable to complete the pass for the victory.

Pashkoski, who won the heat was, was third with Samantha MacDonald (Dartmouth) recovering from a spin for fourth with Brett’s sister Bella Pashkoski (Beaver Bank) in fifth.

Vandenburg opens up a 25-point lead with three scheduled point races to go in the 2023 season.

While it appeared it would be Dylan MacMillan’s (Maitland) night, it ended up being Travis Keefe (Gold River) standing with the trophy at the end of the night in the Toursec Mini Stock race.
Keefe was hot in the tire tracks of MacMillan’s 92 car at the end of the 25-lap feature and while MacMillan’s car crossed the line first, it would fail post race technical inspection. This would give Keefe his second win of the season. Keefe started 10th on the field, dodged two early cautions in the opening two laps and survived the chaos of the opening laps after the final restart to put himself third by the end of Lap Five. The ultimate pass for the win was made on Lap Seven when Keefe passed reigning Tim Hortons Rookie of the Year Chris McMullin (Stewiacke) for what was second on the track at the time. The final 23 laps were run caution free to the finish.

Jamie Dillman (Carroll’s Corner) knocked on the door but could not get past Ross Moore (Lake Egmont) for the runner-up position. McMullin was fourth followed by Chad Sinton (Truro).

Keefe and a returning Chevy MacDonald (Stewiacke), driving the Rick Stein special, picked up qualifying heat wins in the Toursec Mini Stock division.

Moore leads by 22 points over new second place driver Keefe with four point races scheduled in 2023.

Another week and another Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie Contender in victory lane with the Strictly Hydraulics Legends. This week, it was Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) pulling off his first feature win in a Legend car at his home track.
MacKay started ninth in the 19 car field and would launch to the lead on Lap 10 after a battle with Caden Tufts (Timberlea) on a restart. After a slow start to the feature with several cautions in the opening eight laps, the young guns up front settled down and put on an incredible showcase of Legend car racing. Gage Gilby (Enfield) and Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) were able to run away from the pack and chase down MacKay but could not get by the No. 71 car.

Josh Langille (Coldbrook) was able to take home fourth place in the 25-lap Strictly Hydraulics Legends feature with Tufts in fifth.

MacKay, Tufts and Aiden MacDonald (York, PE) picked up heat race victories.

Gilby has cut Christensen’s lead to just six points with only three scheduled point events to go in Halifax for the Strictly Hydraulics Legends.

Deven Smith (Lakeside) shook the monkey off his back on Friday and drove to his first Scotia Speedworld victory of the year in the Third Annual AJK 50.

Smith started 13th in the 19 car field and with three early incidents, the No. 94 Shoreline Cannabis Chevrolet was able to climb to fifth by the completion of Lap 10 of the Bay Equipment Rentals Sportsman feature. The pass for the win was made on Lap 27 when Smith made the move on the outside of Scott O’Neill (Oakfield) for the top spot. The race would run the final 37 laps to the checkered under the green after four yellows and one red flag slowed the field in the first 13 laps of competition.

Travis Roma (West Chezzetcook), making his first start of 2023 in a substitute role for Brentley Pirri (Three Fathom Harbour), who was at his wedding, finished second with the help of a three-wide move on O’Neill and Darren Hilchie (Lake Charlotte) with 20 laps to go. Hilchie came out of that move to hold on to third over the remaining laps with Dylan Dowe (Bedford) and Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville) completing the top five.

Dowe, Joey Livingstone (Pictou Landing) and “The Stud” Dan Cameron (New Glasgow) picked up Tim’s Corner Motorsports and WingNut Productions Heat Races. For Cameron, Friday’s 10-lap qualifier was the first checkered flag of his racing career.

The AJK 50 in memory of Alex Kocken, paid nearly $6,000 to the competitors in attendance for the event.

The next extended distance Bay Equipment Rentals Late Model Sportsman race is Saturday, September 30th for 136-laps in the Halifax 300 to cap the 36th Anniversary Season of Scotia Speedworld.

The championship drive continues for the class Friday night during Strictly Hydraulics Night.
