May 31st: AMP Energy Night
TOURSEC LIGHTNING
On paper, it goes down as “Rational” Richard Drake (Halifax) winning his second straight Toursec Lightning feature of the year. It was far from easy though as he just barely edged out the victory.
Drake, by virtue of his win on opening day, started at the back of the 25-lap event and methodically moved into the top five before a late caution flag set up a quick eight lap dash to the finish. Travis Keefe (Timberlea), who experienced handling issues on Opening Day and reigning track champion Steve Matthews (Bedford), swapped the lead back and forth with Chevy MacDonald (Stewiacke) keeping them honest for most of the opening laps. With the caution, it brought the No. 141 Ken-etic Auto Dodge into the battle. With Richard able to use the outside line, he was able to make up spots. He eventually made it to the outside of Keefe in the No. 145 Dulux Paints Bayers Lake Dodge and battled it out in the closing two laps for the win.
In the end, it was “Rational” Richard being able to edge out Keefe on the outside line to take the win at the stripe. Third was MacDonald while Matthews fell to fifth at the end after the car went away on the champ. Matthew Barkhouse (Dartmouth) was able to slide in for a fourth place finish.
Keefe and Matthews picked up heat race victories.
STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
As the fog began to roll in at Scotia Speedworld, the Strictly Hydraulics Legend drivers tried their best to put the “vortex theory” to work to lift it from the 3/10-mile oval.
After a right front ball joint breaking on Opening Day, Braden Langille (Shubenacadie) parked that failure behind him by winning both his heat and the 25-lap feature on AMP Energy Night. Emily Meehan (Rawdon Gold Mines) bested the sibling battle for the night as she finished ahead of her brother Adam (Rawdon Gold Mines). For Adam, it was his second straight podium run with a different race car as the one he ran on Opening Day is still for sale. Recent Hydraulics Plus Bandolero graduates Nathan Blackburn (Timberlea) and Josh Langille (Coldbrook) completed the top five and continued their solid early season runs.
Blackburn and Braden Langille took home heat race victories. The top Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie in the field was Devin Wadden (Hammonds Plains) with a 15th place finish.
SPORTSMAN
The fog that rolled in during the second half of the Strictly Hydraulics Legends feature became thick enough to restrict visibility for drivers, officials and fans. The feature, which would have been led to green on Friday by Antigonish’s Jeffrey Breen, will be held on another time because qualifying was completed.
Heat races for the division were won by Alex Johnson (Enfield) and Deven Smith (Lakeside).
HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLERO OUTLAW
With car counts booming at Scotia Speedworld, officials made the decision to split the three INEX sanctioned Bandolero divisions into three separate features in hopes of alleviating caution periods in a feature with over fifteen cars.
In the case of the Outlaw division, it seemed to work. Danny Chisholm (Canning) led the field to green in the 15-lap feature, capitalized on the start and led to the finish of the race. Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) was closing at the end but could not find the extra time he needed late in the race to fully catch the No. 87 Eastern Powder Coating Bandolero. Nathan Langille (Coldbrook) had a battle with Owen Mahar (Hubley) in the late laps and would wind up third, a solid run as the team has still been trying to dial in the No. 3 car. Dylan Dowe (Bedford) snuck in for fourth with Mahar in fifth at the finish.
Chisholm and Noble won heat races.
HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLERO BANDITS
Ayden Christensen (Windsor Junction) held control of the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Bandit racing action on AMP Energy Night. A caution on Lap 10 could not throw Christensen off his game as he led wire-to-wire for the win. The yellow did give Gage Gilby (Enfield) the break he needed and was able to move from fourth to second in the closing laps but could not chase down Christensen for the win. Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) finished third in the race, followed by Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River), Brooke Dowe (Bedford) and Morgan Mosher (Mahone Bay).
HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLERO BEGINNER BANDOLEROS
“Finally!”
After a heartbreaking finish on Opening Day, Emily Chisholm (Antigonish) was able to race her way to her first career feature victory, winning the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Beginner Bandolero feature on AMP Energy Night. Chisholm took the lead on the restart of a green-white-checkered finish and held off all challengers for the win in her No. 89 Nova Construction/Keltic Ford Bandolero.
Brett Pashkoski won the heat race and led the most laps in the race but spun chasing Chisholm to the line on the final two lap dash and would wind up fifth in the feature rundown. Miles MacKenzie (Porter’s Lake) took second on AMP Energy Night, followed by Caden Tufts (Timberlea), Emma MacMillan (Noel) and Pashkoski.
