August 30th: Kiddie Rides Night

STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
Braden Langille (Shubenacadie) put on another incredible performance in the Strictly Hydraulics Legend division during Geardrive 2019. Langille started last in the 21-car field and drove to the front to collect the checkered flag in the 25-lap feature. For Langille, it was his sixth feature victory in the CARSTAR Weekly Racing Series in 11 races on the 2019 season. Langille raced to the win ahead of fellow championship contender Tylor Hawes (Porter’s Lake) and Canada East Semi-Pro state championship contender Kody Quinn (Sydney, NS). Austin MacDonald (Pictou, NS), who celebrated his 16th birthday the previous week, and last week’s feature winner Waylon Farrell (Conception Bay South, NL) completed the top five.

Jody Fraser (Sheet Harbour) picked up his first career heat win to start the evening with Joe Ryan Racecars drivers MacDonald and Quinn racing to their respective heat race wins. With Andrew Lively finishing eighth on the evening, the championship lead has shrunk with only one race to go on the 2019 season.

SPORTSMAN
Deven Smith (Lakeside) extended his stranglehold on the Late Model Sportsman division by taking his sixth feature victory of the 2019 season. Smith used an early caution on Lap 11 to gain ground on the field and took the lead shortly after. It was another night for “The Big Three” to be on the podium, with Matt Vaughan (Bedford) holding off Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) for the runner-up spot. Megan Parrott (Beaver Bank) made a great move on the final lap to take fourth over Jeffrey Breen (Antigonish) and Brentley Pirri (Three Fathom Harbour).

Vaughan and Harry Ross White (Noel Road) won heat race qualifiers. HOSS was substituting for Bernie (Center Burlington), who was nursing a foot injury. HOSS would lead the first 11 laps of the feature going away before a parts failure caused the No. 18 Right Track entry to spin in Turn Three.

TOURSEC THUNDER
Taylor McLean (New Glasgow) took home his second career feature victory on Friday night in the Toursec Thunder division. McLean, who has been struggling with motor issues in his No. 18 Hodgson Transport Civic, was able to hold it all together for not only a feature victory but a heat win as well.

The battle for second happened a couple car lengths behind the leader as Dave Matthews (Kennetcook) rebounded from a rough Toursec 50 to finish second ahead of point leader Jesse Deveau (Greenwood). Drew MacEachern (Dartmouth) made his second start of 2019 and would wind up fourth ahead of Greg McKay (Eastern Passage).

TOURSEC LIGHTNING
An explosive night led “Rational” Richard Drake (Halifax) back to victory lane for the fourth time on the 2019 season. Drake, who raced to his first win since June, held off Mike Jollimore (Halifax) on a restart with five laps to go to capture the win. Travis Keefe (Timberlea) raced to third with Chevy MacDonald (Stewiacke) and David Jollimore (Halifax) completing the top five in the 17-car field.

The evening started off with fireworks in the high handicap heat between Marshall Bezanson (Oakfield) and Matthew Barkhouse (Dartmouth), which ultimately led to the pair being disqualified by race officials for their actions on track. Heat races were won by Earl MacDonald (Stewiacke) and Scott Thibodeau (Williamswood). Thibodeau was well in control of the 25-lap feature until five laps to go when the throttle stuck on Jamie Dillman’s (Lantz) car. Dillman’s car sped off the track, impacting the Turn Four tires and launched into the air. Dillman suffered a lower back injury in the accident and was released from hospital on early Saturday morning.

Under that red flag, Thibodeau pitted and would not return to the track.

Through all that, Drake now has a 70 point lead with just two races to go.
