Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandoleros
After only three races, Gage Gilby is a winner in the Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandolero division.
Gilby, after running one event last year, went to victory lane on Friday night as the second different winner on the 2018 season in as many races. Gilby was able to capitalize when Chase MacKay (Bear Cove) slid into leader Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) on a late race restart. Gilby was able to hold the point to the finish with his enthusiastic cheering section of family and friends looking on.
When asked what was going through his mind when he saw the leaders spin? “I was scared!”
MacKay drove back to second place with Campbell Delaney (Halifax) in his first start of the season coming home third. Emily Chisholm (Antigonish) ran within the top five all evening long and came home with a solid P4 finish ahead of Caden Tufts (Timberlea).
Noble took home the heat race victory for the class.
HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS
Owen Mahar (Hubley) has won his share of Bandit races, but this one is pretty big.
Mahar not only took the checkered flag in the Hydraulics Plus Bandolero Bandit division, he took the overall win as he bested the best in Bandolero land in Atlantic Canada. Scoring the victory was far from easy as Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow) challenged for most of the second half of the event.
As Rogers chased Mahar, Josh Langille (Coldbrook) and Nate Singer (Kennetcook) reeled in the leaders. The quartet played a high speed game of chess in the waning laps with Mahar able to hold on for the win.
In the closing lap, Langille was able to nip Rogers for second overall and the win amongst the Outlaw class drivers. Rogers scored third overall, followed by Singer and Danny Chisholm (Canning).
Singer and Mahar took heat race wins.
TOURSEC LIGHTNING
“It’s Miller Time Baby!”
Steve Matthews (Bedford) returned to victory lane for the second time in three races by winning the Toursec Lightning feature on Kiddie Night. Matthews, who finished fourth in the Toursec 50, grabbed the lead on a restart with six laps to go after making the move on Marshall Bezanson (Lake Egmont) from the outside line.
Matthews was quick to credit crew chief Stan Miller for making the adjustments they needed between the 50-lap feature and Friday’s 25-lap main event to bring the car back to victory lane.
Bezanson, who had been plagued with chasing mechanical issues on his No. 106 car, came home second with Halifax’s Michael Jollimore rebounding to score his first podium of 2018 in third. Chevy MacDonald (Stewiacke) put up his strongest performance of the season with a fourth place run with Darrell Sullivan (Harrietsfield) completing the top five.
Bezanson and Matthews pocketed 10-lap heat race victories.
TOURSEC THUNDER
Jesse Deveau (Greenwood) had his heart broken after leading 47 laps of the Toursec 50 and could not seal the deal to grab the checkered flag one week ago.
All was forgotten on Kiddie Night as Deveau took home his first Toursec Thunder feature win. To score the victory, he only led one lap in his No. 51 Greenwood Auto Sales/TJ Greenlawn Civic - the final one.
David Hibbs made his return to racing at Scotia Speedworld and led the most laps in the race before having a challenge from Darren Flemming (Rawdon) for the lead. Hibbs and Flemming went door to door for a number of laps and found each other pitted side by side for a restart with eight laps to go. Deveau restarted fourth and kept lockstep with the top two.
Coming to the white flag, the pair of white cars battling for the lead drifted up the track. As Flemming and Hibbs tried to catch their cars, Deveau saw the opportunity of a lifetime to go low. Deveau and Hibbs drove hard on the final lap with the run from Hibbs on the outside line off Turn Four falling inches short to Deveau.
Flemming held on to third with Neil Miousse (Kentville) and Tim Webster (Beaver Bank) completing the top five.
Hibby and Deveau paraded the checkered flags in Toursec Thunder heat races.
STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS
Nicholas Naugle (Dartmouth) returned to his roots to take home a checkered flag Friday night in the Strictly Hydraulics Legends feature.
Naugle started ninth in the 21-car field and wasted little time moving his way to the front of the pack. After a number of early cautions, Naugle found himself in second by the halfway point and passed reigning track champion Paul Goulden (Shelburne) early in the second half for the win.
Goulden continued his early season consistency by finishing second with sophomore Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville) in third. Nathan Blackburn (Timberlea), who won his heat and led a number of early feature laps, wound up just off the podium with an impressive fourth place finish. Tylor Hawes (Porters Lake) was fifth.
Blackburn was joined as a heat winner by Cory Hall (Jolicure, NB) and Gary Bordage (Dartmouth). For Bordage, it was his first heat race win in a Strictly Hydraulics Legend.
