August 17th: Strictly Hydraulics "INEX" Night

Affordable Fuels Sportsman

Racing is a sport of fractions of seconds. Case in point, the finish of the Affordable Fuels Sportsman feature on Friday night.

When the tape was checked in the photo finish for the victory, race control awarded the win to Richard Salter. It was Salter’s second win of the season after winning the 24th Annual Shriners Classic for his first career Late Model win.

Salter, who said he felt like a rabbit once again, was challenged on the outside for most of the race by Brentley Pirri (Three Fathom Harbour). Pirri, looking for his first win, did what most could not do all night long and kept with Salter on the top side without giving up any ground. Pirri, while disappointed he was not the winner, was happy with his finish considering how his season has gone to this point.

Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) was patient throughout the race, used the cautions to his advantage to gain track position and would come home third in the 38-lap feature. Darren Wallage (Oakfield) picked up his second top five of the season with a fourth place run while leading Tim Hortons at the Airport Rookie Deven Smith (Lakeside) would edge out fifth place in the 17-car field.

Salter and Pirri took home heat race victories.

With only three races left in the 2018 season, Veinotte has built a comfortable 20 point lead over Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake), who finished seventh in the feature on Friday night.

STRICTLY HYDRAULICS LEGENDS

Emily Meehan (Rawdon) waited for an opportunity and it came with two laps to go to ultimately score her fourth checkered flag in the Strictly Hydraulics Legend car season.

Meehan, who said post race she was happy in second place, jumped at a chance after Craig MacDonald (Waverley) left the bottom open heading into Turn One on Lap 49 of the extended 50-lap feature. The two raced hard for the final half mile with the No. 75 coming out ahead of the Overall Experience No. 2.
MacDonald, subbing in for Ray Cox Jr. (Porter’s Lake) was visibly frustrated post race but was still able to nail down second place for the Mark Whynot led team. Andrew Lively (Middle Sackville) pressured early and often but would wind up third. Shelby Baker (Fall River) who ran many laps in second, fell to fourth at the end with Paul Goulden (Shelburne) finishing fifth.

The race served as an INEX National Qualifier for Asphalt Nationals at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 27th. Meehan (Semi Pro), Baker (Pro) and Goulden (Masters) were tops in their respective INEX classes.

MacDonald and Shane Lively (Middle Sackville) took home heat wins in the 16-car field.

TOURSEC LIGHTNING

It only took five races for Matthew Barkhouse (Dartmouth) to find victory lane in the Toursec Lightning division.

Barkhouse, with help from the Alexander Racing team, scored his first career feature win Friday night in the 25-lap main event. Barkhouse would see the field come back to him just shy of the halfway point with a caution period but Barkhouse was able to keep the field at bay for the big win.

Nick Hurshman (Tantallon), filling in for Travis Keefe (Gold River) in a familiar number to Hurshman, finished second in his racing return to Scotia Speedworld with point leader Steve Matthews (Bedford) finishing a strong third. Marshall Bezanson (Oldham) barely missed another podium finish by coming home fourth with “Rational” Richard Drake (Halifax) in fifth.

Barkhouse and Bezanson took home heat wins.

HYDRAULICS PLUS BANDOLEROS

Sam Rogers (Lower Onslow) dug deep in a race with major INEX points implications to pick up his second win of the season but maybe more importantly an INEX Qualifier victory.
In a race Rogers described in victory lane as “wild,” Rogers held off Colton Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) and Nathan Langille (Coldbrook) for the win. Dylan Dowe (Bedford) scored his best run of the season with a strong fourth place finish while Matthew Rushton (Dartmouth) scored his fifth Outlaw top five finish of the season with a fifth place effort.

The first 15 laps of the race ran caution free before a wreck in Turn Two ended the night for four drivers, including Devin Wadden (Halifax) and Jordan Rushton (Dartmouth) with crash damage. Josh Langille (Coldbrook) and Nate Singer (Kennetcook), who received damage in the crash, were parked by race officials for failure to obey a raceceiver and not coming to a stop under a red flag condition.

Brooke Dowe (Bedford) was the top Bandit of the night, winning her heat race and feature amongst her peers. Dowe finished seventh overall in the feature, ahead of Morgan Mosher (Mahone Bay) and Austin Hiscock (Freshwater, NL), who drove the No. 66 for Owen Mahar.

Heat races were won by Jordan Rushton and Danny Chisholm (Canning).

HYDRAULICS PLUS BEGINNER BANDOLEROS

Gage Gilby (Enfield) continued his impressive Hydraulics Plus Beginner Bandolero season with his fifth victory in just his eighth career race and seventh of 2018. Gilby raced to the line ahead of Ayden Christensen and Campbell Delaney after Dawson Noble (Upper Nine Mile River) spun late to set up a late race restart. Noble would cross the line fourth ahead of Caden Tufts in the extended 20-lap feature on INEX Night.

Gilby came home with the heat race victory.
