July 28th: CARSTAR Night & Shriner's Classic
Travis Roma (West Chezzetcook) was nothing short of emotional on Friday night after emerging from the #38 Ryzer Fabrication/Mike Rushton Snap on Tools Chevolet as the winner of the 23rd Annual Shriners Classic for Sportsman.
Roma, along with his cousin Chris, saw their fathers Terry and Lockie guide the #38 to three Shriners Classic victories and now the Roma name is on the trophy for a fourth time.
Roma battled for a majority of the race with Matt Vaughan (Fletchers Lake) for the lead. The two, who battled the week prior for the win in the Affordable Fuels Sportsman division, had a see saw battle as Vaughan tried to wrestle the lead away from Roma on the outside line.
The final restart in the race came with eight laps remaining in the 50 lap feature and after Vaughan had settled in behind Roma, Russell Smith Jr (Lakeside) began to make his move in an effort to win a third straight Shriners Classic. Smith shadowed Roma for a number of late laps before going to the outside on the final lap. Roma would edge Smith by less than a car length for his first victory in the prestigious race.
Roma was choked up in victory lane as it set in that he had won the race, one that had got away from the Roma Brothers Racing team in the past two seasons.
Smith Jr’s car did not pass post race inspection, giving Vaughan the second place finish and moving veteran Chris Dingle (Elmsdale) to third. Dingle was on the podium in the Shriners Classic in 2010 when Colby Smith (Cape Sable Island) won the race. Smith was battling for a podium spot late in the race but a spin with eight laps to go ended his chances at a second Shriners Classic title.
Steve Matthews (Bedford), in his first Sportsman race driving for Josh Collins Racing, brought home an impressive fourth place finish in the 17 car field. Point leader entering the event Jordan Veinotte (Porter’s Lake) would recover from an early incident to finish fifth.
Heat races were run for the Shriners Classic on July 7th and were won by Roma and Aaron Boutilier (Porter’s Lake). Boutilier suffered mechanical issues with his car early and would come back on track 16 laps down.
Roma now has a one point lead as the Affordable Fuels Sportsman division prepares to run their next 38-lap race on Canadian National Autism Foundation Night.
